Custom software (also known as bespoke software or tailor made software) is software that is specially developed for some specific organization or other user. As such, it can be contrasted with the use of software packages developed for the mass market, such as commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) software, or existing free software.

Custom software (also known as bespoke software or tailor made software) is software that is specially developed for some specific organization or other user. As such, it can be contrasted with the use of software packages developed for the mass market, such as commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) software, or existing free software.

Since custom software is developed for a single customer it can accommodate that customer's particular preferences and expectations. Custom software may be designed in stage by stage processes, allowing all nuances and possible hidden dangers to be taken into account, including issues which were not mentioned in the specifications. Especially the first phase in the software development process may involve many departments, including marketing, engineering, research and development and general management.

Large companies commonly use custom software for critical functions, including content management, inventory management, customer management, human resource management, or otherwise to fill the gaps present in the existing software packages. Often such software is legacy software, developed before COTS software packages offering the required functionality became available.

Custom software development is often considered expensive compared to off-the-shelf solutions or products. This can be true if one is speaking of typical challenges and typical solutions. However, it is not always true; custom software development, in TEQ’s point of view is often a matter of building a house upon a solid foundation and, if managed properly, it is possible to do this quickly and to a high standard. In many cases, COTS software requires customization to correctly support the buyer's operations. The cost and delay of COTS customization frequently adds up to the expense of developing custom software.

Our approach to customize software development is segregated into the following 6 major stages, which is used and proven of its successful end-results.

  1. System Study
  2. A study will be conducted to gather understanding about the project and its requirements, to identify suitable concepts to use during the project development stage. Detailed user requirements will be studied and documented, including functional, UI, and integrations requirements. Close communication with users is required during this stage.

  3. Wireframe Design
  4. Creation and design of a system based on the key findings of the study and preliminary concept feedback. Based on the system study results we will prepare functional specification document along with a wireframe mock up of the entire system. The wireframe will consist of all user interfaces equipped with basic click functions, although without any graphical design. In terms of web applications, for an instance, all web pages will be developed; users can clearly see the fields/links/buttons available, clicking to play around, determining the redirection of each navigation, etc. The wireframe allows users to understand the functions available in the final product much better hence avoid unnecessary change during development phase.

 



  1. Graphic User Interface (GUI) Design
  2. Once wireframe and functional specification is approved by users, we can then proceed to prepare final GUI of the system. These GUI designs will incorporate the ease of user navigation and system friendliness which is then be applied into the wireframe for users’ approval.

  3. Functional Development
  4. Parallel with Stage 3, the functional development stage, where actual functional codes will be developed, including database design. More release milestones will be planned for this stage so that both parties can ensure the project progression and that it is on the right track.

    During this stage, "Incremental Development" methodology will be employed. The entire system will be broken down into several software layers, these layers will then be broken down again into smaller piece modules/function groups. Each of these module pieces will go through a mini-"Waterfall" development cycle where classic software development life cycle is implemented: defining requirements design and planning functional development testing. Each of these small module pieces will be unit-tested internally using small custom made tester program to ensure the functional accuracy and fully debugged before finally be combined together to form a larger piece of software component, so on until the whole proposed system is completed. An internal alpha-test will finally be performed on the entire system.

  5. System Testing & Training
  6. After development completed, the system will be deployed into the staging environment. A thorough internal testing of system will be done on a contained environment to access the basic functionality of the system developed before proceeding to a User Acceptance Test (UAT) by the client. A system test plan and user guide will be prepared for user testing and training sessions.

  7. Production Deployment
  8. After accepted by users, the entire system is will be deploy to the production environment. This stage will also include any necessary data migration before system goes live. The system will go live after a Final Acceptance Test.

The system will be maintained and managed by a Continuous Improvement Cycle after system goes LIVE. Our approach is simple, yet effective. MyKad Solutions

MyKad is the compulsory identity document for Malaysian citizens aged 12 and above which is introduced by the National Registration Department of Malaysia on 5 September 2001 as a replacement for the High Quality Identity Card. Malaysia became the first country in the world to use an identification card that incorporates both photo identification and fingerprint biometric data on an in-built computer chip embedded in a piece of plastic.

Over the last 20 years, web technologies has evolved tremendously, from the simplest static HTML web pages, to the highly sophisticated server-side web application. The evolution is, undoubtingly, driven by the ever increasing requirements from users, in terms of speed, efficiency, ease of use, information state control, UI design, etc. Today, AJAX constitutes an important role in delivering state-of-the-art UI design, especially in enterprise management systems.

TEQ AJAX UI Framework is designed with this in mind, aim to provide a flexible and powerful base framework for various kinds of data management systems we develop for our clients. It is a set of tools and functions developed on top of Microsoft .Net 4.0, AJAX, JSON, JQuery, CSS/LESS and more, a framework that allows us to develop fully AJAX high performance applications that best suit our clients.

Applications developed using the TEQ AJAX UI Framework has the following attributes and advantages:

  • Fully AJAX. That means, all/most connections to server are done via AJAX method. Content on pages switches asynchronously without the conventional blank loading page nor page refreshing. This modern user experience will be similar to Gmail.com, Outlook.com and many other modern websites.
  • Fast and efficient. When user switches to a specific module/page, or requests for a list of data, only the necessary portion of the page is being updated with new content, and only necessary data is being downloaded. Furthermore, data transfer are done using JSON, a highly efficient and compact form of data serialization. This saves large amount of unnecessary data transfer between server and browser in conventional web pages, and in terms increase server performance. The difference in bandwidth footprints is especially dominant when comparing to classic ASP.Net AJAX Framework.
  • Stateful. Since the framework is mostly client-side script driven, it performs excellently in state management when compare to classic ASP.Net. It eliminates the heavy ViewState chunk in classic ASP.Net, and reduce server RAM footprints caused by large sessions data. In-application state data are stored in local (browser) memory, enabling fast and efficient processing.
  • Standardized look & feel. Using CSS to standardize elements style, applications will have a unified look and feel throughout all pages, and at the same time highly customizable. Behind the scene, we uses LESS, a CSS compilation engine to develop CSS for our applications, enabling us to develop and maintain CSS definitions in highly structured manner.
  • Highly dynamic UI elements. Utilizing the rich selection of existing JQuery UI Controls, we can deliver applications with modern-looking, highly responsive, dynamic and user friendly UI elements, such as the few examples shown in picture next page. Our framework is designed to work seamlessly with JQuery UI Controls, avoiding any incompatibilities which often raised in classic server-side script driven ASP.Net.
  • HTML5 enabled. The framework utilizes advanced features in HTML5, such as drag & drop files, canvas, etc to enhance user experience. Meanwhile, the framework is also backward compatible with older browsers by falling back to legacy scripts when HTML5 is not supported by browsers.
  • Secured and structured application layers. The framework enforces a structured programming layers separating UI logics and data/business rules into two, as illustrated in diagram below. Besides, the framework also enforces various programming best practices such as definition of error codes, typed data modeling, data verifications, and much more. Combined, this helps to increase the security and maintainability of the system.

    • Build-in page numbering.
    • Build-in function to populate a Report from a DataSet or DataTable object.
    • Report data are saved in vector format. When paper orientation is changed, report will be redrawn (e.g., text will be realigned).
    • Report data can be saved to a XML file and be opened later.
    • Report can be exported to picture (JPG), HTML, or MS Excel.
    • Inclusive a Report Viewer Windows User Control with complete printing, paper settings, zooming and navigating functions. Embedding a chart on a Windows Form made easy.
